You deserve to SEE them!  School kids deserve to LEARN about them!
 
Graham Austin
Painter in watercolour, oil and acrylic, a teacher, Born Sydney 1941, attended national Art School 1957 – 1961.  Life member AWI, President, Peninsula Art Society & Foundation.  Represented widely in State and Regional Gallery collections.
 
Earle Backen
Earle Backen was born in Albury, N.S.W., September 1927. Specialises in abstract and semi-abstract prints. He studied at the Julian Ashton School, Sydney under John Passmore and in 1954 was awarded the New South Wales Travelling Art Scholarship. He travelled to England and studied in London at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and the Slade School. In Paris 1956-1957 and in 1959 he studied engraving at S.W. Hayter's Atelier 17. He returned to Sydney late in 1959, and taught at the National Art School, Sydney Alexander Mackie College N.S.W. where he set up the printmaking studio. In recent years he has become well known as a painter. Is exhibited in many important galleries including the Taylor Galleries, Gibson Gallery and the National Art Gallery of Malaysia.
Awards include NSW Travelling Scholarship in 1954; CAS Sydney prize for prints 1960; Mosman prize 1965.
Representation: His work is represented within Australia at all State galleries, at the Newcastle regional gallery and at the Cincinatti Art Museum in USA.
 
James Barker
Born 1931. Australian printmaker, painter (mostly landscape in the post-impressionist style), teacher, etchings, screen prints. Worked and studied in Italy and Australia.
Awards include the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW in 1973.
Representation: His work is represented at the Australian National Gallery in Canberra, and the Victorian Art Gallery.
 
Kevin Best
An “Aussie traditionalist”, Kevin’s works hang in private collections worldwide.  He is particularly popular with Japanese collectors.  Kevin was recently honoured with the OAM.
 
Alex Butler
Alex has taught in Arts colleges in Qld and NSW. He has had many solo and group exhibitions.  His works are widely exhibited nationally, regionally and internationally.
 
John Coburn
Born 1925. Painter, tapestry designer and printmaker.
Awards: Won the Blake Prize in 1960; the D’Arcy Morris in 1963; the Blake (shared with Rodney Milgate) in 1977.
Representation: His work is represented in the Vatican Museum in Rome, in major galleries in Vienna and Washington, in the Sydney Opera House and in the Australian National Gallery in Canberra. Also in the Regional galleries of the Gold Coast, Newcastle, Rockhampton and Bendigo.
He is a Member of the Order of Australia.
 
Elisabeth Cummings
Born 1934.
Awards include Le Gay Brereton prize in 1957 and a NSW Travelling scholarship in 1958.
Representation: Her work is represented at the State galleries of NSW and Qld.
 
Shay Docking
Shay has a personal interest in ‘volcanic images.  Shay has held many exhibitions and was represented in the NGA, AGNSW, SA, QUAG and Regional Galleries
 
Ruth Faerber
Born 1922, and is a renowned printmaker and critic.
Awards: She is the winner of more than 14 Awards for her prints.
Representation: Her work is represented at the State galleries of NSW, Vic and
Tasmania and internationally at the Bethabel Museum in Israel.
 
Doreen Gadsby
Born Lismore, NSW. Studied at East Sydney Technical College 1941 - 1943 and later with George Lawrence and John Santry. Lived in Canada 1971 - 1981. Currently living in Sydney. Married to artist John Coburn.
Awards: Wentworth Art Prize 1961. WD&HO Wills Art Prize 1962. Exhibited Wynne Prize 1960, 1961, 1962, 1964.
Representation: Commonwealth Government Collection; Art Bank; Private collections - USA, Canada, Indonesia and Australia.
 
Chris Gentle
Born 1939. Has been the Director of the Ivan Dougherty Gallery at the University of NSW College of Fine Arts since 1977-86.
Senior Lecturer College of Arts 1981-present day
Representation: Australian National Gallery; State galleries of NSW, Qld, Art Bank etc.
 
Joseph A. Klimek
Joseph was born in Poland in 1918.  In 1950 Joseph gained a Diploma of fine Arts, Krakow Poland.  Joseph has taught art since 1961.  Formally head of the Seaforth Tech 1971-79. His works have been widely exhibited and he is represented in Poland, Europe, USA, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand.
 
Barbara Konkolowicz
Photographer. Curator of the Meroogal Art Exhibition and of the Historic Houses Trust of NSW.
Through the Meroogal Women's Arts Prize the Historic Houses Trust encourages the practice of traditional women's arts and crafts and supports contemporary perspectives on these, for the appreciation of a broader audience.” Visit Meroogal Art Exhibition web page.
 
Peter Laverty
Born in England 1926, moved to Australia 1951.
Head of the National Art School 1971. Director of the Art Gallery of NSW 1971-77.
Awards include the Grenfell 1960, Grafton 1969, Windsor 1981, Lismore 1982
Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Award, Second International Pan Pacific ExhibitionTokyo 1962 etc..
Representation: His work is represented at the State galleries of  NSW, Vic,  Qld, Tasmania, WA; Regional galleries of Bendigo, Penrith, Mosman, Manly etc.
 
Ursula Laverty*
Born in England in 1930, arrived Australia in 1949.
Awards include the Mosman Drawing Prize in 1957, Maitland Print Prize 1980.
Representation: Her work is represented in the State galleries of NSW, Victoria and Qld, and the Regional of Newcastle, Bendigo, Mosman, Manly etc.
 
Robin Lawrence
Trained National Art School Sydney. Lived in America for some years. Head of Art Department at Rudolph Steiner School, New York 1967-86.
Awards: Include the Cameron Art Prize. She recently exhibited in the Archibald Prize and has regular solo exhibitions.
 
Elwyn Lynn
Born 1917. Began as an expressionist and later concentrated on collage.
Awards include the Blake Prize 1957.
He was conferred with the Order of Australia in 1975.
Representation: His work is represented at all the State galleries.
 
Bettina McMahon
Born 1930 and is a painter and printmaker of note.
Awards include Member print for the Print Council of Australia 1981 plus many prestigious regional awards.
Representation: Her work is represented in the Australian National Gallery in Canberra and the Art Gallery of NSW. It also hangs in many regional galleries.
 
Frank McNamara
Born 1916 and specialised mainly in watercolour.
Awards include Australians at War (1st and 2nd prizes) 1945 and the Art Gallery of NSW Trustees Watercolour Prize in 1968, 1969 and 1973.
Representation: His work is represented in the Australian National Gallery in Canberra plus the Australian War Museum collection there. He is in the State galleries of Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia plus many Regional galleries.
 
Jocelyn Maughan
Jocelyn was born in NSW attended National Art School and has had a teaching career as an art educator. Awards include Geach & Margret Fosq prizes for traditional painting.  Head of Medowbank School of Art & Design.  Jocelyn’s works are widely found in corporate and private collections.
 
Rodney Milgate
The Hornsby Art Society was founded in 1964 by a group of local Hornsby TAFE students under the tutelage of Rodney Milgate (artist, poet, writer and playwright). Milgate was born 1934.
Awards: Won the Blake Prize in 1966 with his work (oil on hardboard) Ascension. Also won, in 1970, the D’Arcy Morris Award.
Representation: His works are hung in the Australian National Gallery at Canberra; the Art Gallery of WA, Art Gallery of SA, Art Gallery of NSW;  also at the Regional galleries in Geelong and Newcastle. Internationally his work is in the Mertz Collection, USA.
 
Clement Millward
Born 1929 and specialises in romanticised landscapes.
Awards include the Wynne in 1972 and the Grenfell in 1974.
Representation: His work is hanging in many galleries including the Art Gallery of NSW.
 
Robin Norling
Born in 1939 robin has studied at National Art School and at Royal College of Arts, London. Formally chief Education office AGNSW.  Awards include Robert L Gay Brereton Drawing Prize, Sulman Prize, Sun herald Cook Bi-Centennial Prize, Gosford Art prize. Robin is widely exhibited including AFNSW, institutional and in private collections.
 
Terence O'Donnell
Born in 1941 Terence studied at national Art School, He is a teacher of painting and drawing.  He retired in 2000 from the position of Senior lecturer and Head Painting Studies at COFA to paint full-time. Terence is represented at AGNSW, MAGNT, The Australia-Japan Foundation, Tokyo and at corporate and Regional galleries.
 
Danial Pata
Born 1952 Danial is a painter and teacher. Lives and paints part of the time in France. Member of the Australian Watercolour Institute
Work featured in the 2003 End Of Year exhibition at Mahoney’s Galleries, Melbourne. He is represented at Charles Stuart University, St, Peters College, Oxford, Sultan of Brunei collection and in other private collections in Australia, Europe and USA.
 
Peter Pinson
Born 1943, specialises in geometrical abstracts.
War artist 1986-?
Assoc Prof. College of Fine Arts, University of Sydney 1991-2004
Awards include the Mirror Waratah in 1964 and also the Grenfel in 1964, NSW Travelling Scholarship 1968.
Representation: His work is in the Art Gallery of NSW and the Royal College of Art, London.
 
Ken Reinhard
Born 1936, he is a Modernist painter and sculptor.
Director of Fine Arts, University of Sydney 1970-? (now retired)
Awards that he has won include the John F. Kennedy Memorial Prize of 1964; the Sulman in 1964; the Darcy Morris in 1966; the Marland House Sculpture Award in 1971.
On Friday 8th February to Thursday 11th April, 2003, The Murdoch Gallery
marked the installation of Ken Reinhard's Marland House Sculpture in the McClelland Sculpture Park, the Gallery held a retrospective of his past works.
Representation: National Gallery of Australia. State Galleries of NSW, WA, Victoria.
 
Elizabeth Rooney
Born in 1924 Elizabeth is a painter and etcher.  She has worked with Herbert Gallop.  She helped establish Etching facilities at Workshop Art Centre, Willoughby.  He awards include Mosman Print prize.  She is represented at AGNSW and in collections in Europe, UK, and Australia.
 
David Rose
Born 1936 and is a printmaker and painter of note.
Representation: His works are represented in the Australian National Gallery at Canberra, in the State galleries of NSW, Queensland, West Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. He is also represented in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
 
Brian Stratton
Born 1936 Brian is a teacher of Art at the NSW Dept of Technical Education.  He is a foundation member of the Ryde Art Society. Noted art awards include; Mercedes-Benz Prize for watercolour, 4 Rothmans Foundation Awards, Grenfel hennery Lawson Award.  His works are represented in the Regional Galleries of Manly, Bathurst, Grafton and Rockhampton.
 
Tony Tuckson
Born in Egypt in 1921, arrived in Australia in 1942.  Died in 1972.  Tony had many solo and group shows throughout his career.  He was Deputy Director of AGNSW.  A memorial exhibition was held in 1976 at AGNSW and at the National Art gallery retrospective in 2001.  His works are hung in the national gallery of Australia and in most state and Regional galleries.
 
Margaret Tuckson
A potter and ceramicist. She studied ceramics at East Sydney Tech. She has exhibited widely with the Potters society. He works may be found at NGV and in many Regional Galleries.
 
Rose Vickers
Rose studied at the National Arts School and has taught printmaking widely. Her awards include the Drummoyne Print prize. He work maybe found at the AGNSW and in many Regional galleries.
 
Guy Warren
In the new book on Australian artist Guy Warren, former Sydney Morning Herald art critic John McDonald writes: "If Guy Warren is not Australia's most shamefully underrated artist", then it is hard to see who else has a better claim on the title. He has had 46 solo shows, and many group exhibitions both here and in Europe and Asia; Awards:  two Archibald’s; an Order of Australia; and now a book and another exhibition.
Warren was born in 1921. His style is technological innovation – abstraction. Among other famous works, he designed the portraits for the Australian $2, $10 and $20 currency notes.
Representation: His works are hung in the Australian National Gallery at Canberra; at the State galleries of NSW, SA, Qld, WA. He is also in the Regional galleries of Bendigo, Shepparton and Newcastle.
 
Joyce Warren
Joyce is one of Australia’s leading ceramicists. She studied at Ashton and at the national Arts School.  Joyce was a founding member of the Crafts Council of Australia. A Lecturer at the Art Institute and SGA. He ceramic items can be found at the national Gallery of Australia and the national Gallery, Victoria.
 
Eric Wilson
Elizabeth Green has donated 3 sketches and a rare handwritten letter from the renowned artist the late Eric Wilson.
 
Margaret Woodward
Is a resident of Hornsby, and is recognized as an important Australian artist.
In 2003 the Parramatta Council mounted a major exhibition at its Heritage Centre of Ms Woodward’s past works. That such an exhibition is not currently possible in Hornsby is a sad reflection on Hornsby’s lack of facilities for the Arts.Awards include the Le Gay Brereton in 1959 and the Wynne in 1971.Representation: Her work hangs in the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory; the collections of the Universities of NSW and WA (Murdoch) and the Art Gallery of NSW.
